14,511 papers · ForceAtlas layout of the citation graph
Each dot is a paper; dot size is total citation degree. Three layouts place the same ~14,500 papers differently:
Use Color by to recolor: semantic topic/cluster, Leiden citation community, year, or citation count. (The embedding views default to topics; the ForceAtlas view to communities.)
On the Gemini and ForceAtlas maps, the Time control re-lays-out the field as it stood up to a given year (≤ 1980 / 1990 / 2000 / 2010, or “All” for now). Each snapshot re-runs the layout (UMAP of the embeddings, or a force-directed layout of the citation graph) using only the papers and citations that existed by then, so you can watch the structure grow. Colours and topic/community membership stay the present-day clustering — only the positions change.
Hover any paper for its title, year and authors. Click a paper to draw its citation links and open the side panel. Toggle citation edges to see where the citation graph crosses the layout — on the embedding maps, long edges connect papers cited together but semantically distant.
Toggle Intra-topic citation islands to reveal where a topic's papers split into separate citing groups: within each topic, the citation links among its own papers are broken into connected components, and every multi-paper component beyond the largest is enlarged as an “island” so it stands out. When you colour by topic/cluster the islands are also recoloured (main body keeps the topic colour, islands get a bright palette, papers citing nothing within the topic are greyed); when you colour by community, year or citations that colouring is kept, so you can see e.g. which community each island belongs to. Several islands in one topic means papers that share a subject but form separate, non-citing literatures.
